FAQ's

When I tell people what I am doing and what I want to do, people ask a lot of questions, A LOT and most of the time it’s the same ones. So here are a few answers to some of the most common questions I get, let me know if you would like some more answers...

Why are you doing this?

Why not? It's what I like to do. Once you start travelling on a bike its difficult just to stop and not do it anymore. Everyone who has done it will agree, it's in my nature and I love it. For me it is more difficult to keep a job, get married or build a house, these are things I would ask you questions about how you manage to do!

Why on a bike?

It's the perfect speed, not too fast, not too slow and you can still cover a lot of distance per day (if you feel like..) You stop in places you would not stop using a car, bus, or even hitchhiking, it allows you to be in the middle of surroundings, for the better or worse. It is also a plus to travel on human power only. Of course there are also negative sides, you think twice before doing a 100km detour... and you always feel a bit scared to leave your bike outside the shop to get your groceries.

Why alone?

It’s simple really, I prefer travelling alone than to stay at home. It’s not that I really want do travel alone all the time, it's just not that easy to find someone to travel with. You need to share the same ideas, want to travel the same way at the same speed, have the same time off to do your trip, the same... a lot of things. It’s not easy to find, so I just start alone and sometimes travel together with other people I meet on the road. This allows you to have the freedom to decide at any moment if you keep together or choose your own way again.

Did you train a lot to do this?

Uhhhh training? What is that again?? No, not at all, but I am very sporty with a good natural base condition. It's not that I start my trip doing 200km every day, probably not even 100km. I just start with what feels ok, maybe it's only 30km on the first day, but you quickly get used to it and you can then increase your daily distance accordingly

How many km's will you do in total?

I don't know, I will tell you when I'm back!

Did you plan your route?

Roughly yes, I check where I would like to go, and where I don't want to or shouldn't go. I can still change or adapt while I'm travelling. I think the best way to plan your trip is to listen to the locals and to the other bikers you meet on the road.

How do you stay in touch?

I'm not on another planet so I guess there is still wifi-4G and if necessary on local SIM-cards. But I have to admit, multimedia is not my strongest point, so please let me know if you have any suggestions. For this trip I will also use a spotter (with satellite connection) so at least someone knows where I am exactly.

When do you come back?

Well, actually, I did find a new job, starting January 1st 2020. So looks like I'll be back for new years eve?
